An Easton man, identified as 21-year-old Markenson Beuge, has been arrested on charges related to the sexual assault of a middle school student in Brockton, as WHDH reports. The assault allegedly took place earlier this week when the 13-year-old victim was walking home from West Middle School. According to police, the girl was approached by the suspect in a driveway on West Elm Street and, after a short struggle, managed to escape to safety.
The arrest came after the execution of a search warrant on Cherry Street by Brockton school police, resulting in Beuge's capture Friday night, NBC Boston states. Officials have yet to release additional details surrounding the incident or the nature of the assault, but Beuge is expected to be arraigned on sexual assault charges next week.
In response to the incident, Brockton Public Schools interim Superintendent Priya Tahiliani released a statement calling the situation "deeply concerning" and assured ongoing collaboration with authorities, "We are working closely with the Brockton Police Department to support the student and family affected by this deeply concerning incident and will work with the police to help in identifying a suspect," Tahiliani said, in comments obtained by WHDH. The school district has notified its community, urging heightened vigilance and the reporting of any concerning behavior.
Following the report of the sexual assault, Beuge was arrested and transported to the Brockton police department, WCVB notes; as the community processes this event, the school district's effort to maintain a safe environment for its students continues, with the authorities and the school system finding themselves under an intense spotlight as they navigate the intersection of criminal justice and student safety.
