Kappy's Subs, a cherished spot in Central Florida famous for its cheesesteaks, is closing after 57 years. The family-owned restaurant in Maitland announced on Facebook that it will shut down after this weekend due to failed lease negotiations with the new property owners, as reported by ClickOrlando.
According to ClickOrlando, Executive Chef Adam Milsom expressed the emotional toll the closure has had on him: "It has been an absolute honor for me and my family to serve this community for the past 52 years. We deeply appreciate everyone who has walked through our doors throughout our time in service and will miss being able to feed y’all every day. Closing Kappy's is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do in my life and I have been brought to tears on several occasions in the past few days."
The restaurant's final day has been scheduled for Saturday, Sept 14, with the doors closing definitively at 4 p.m. or sooner if they run out of food, as detailed by FOX 35 Orlando. Located at 501 N. Orlando Ave., just a stone's throw from the Maitland SunRail station, Kappy's Subs has been a witness to substantial changes in its locale, as modern apartment buildings and shopping complexes have risen around the cozy establishment.
Devotees of Kappy's Subs have taken to social media to mourn the loss of what has become a regional icon. "Kappy’s to hundreds of us, equals home. The ties grow deeper that a cheesesteak sub and a milkshake. The Kaplans are Family," shared Patrice Campitelli on social media, cited by FOX 35 Orlando, mirroring the thoughts of many in the community.
In the final days leading up to the closure, Milsom promises to serve as many customers as possible: "We will be open until we run out of food or Saturday at the latest, and we will endeavor to serve as many of you as possible," he ensured in statements shared by FOX 35 Orlando.
