After 66 sweet seasons of serving ice cream to the locals and visitors near Lake Michigan, Sherman’s Dairy Bar is preparing to close its doors permanently. The Sherman's Dairy Bar announced in a Facebook post, expressing gratitude for being a part of summer traditions for generations. "We have loved being part of your summer traditions for 66 seasons, and we know many of you have fond memories of a scoop at Sherman’s", read the statement from the company. The last day for customers to enjoy their favorite frozen treats will be October 26.
A swell of customers has been sharing cherished memories on social media following the announcement. One Shannon commented in the Facebook post, reminiscing about bike rides over to the shop for a creamy delight. In an expression of nostalgia, a resident, Mary, told ClickOnDetroit, "My siblings and I would ride our bikes over for an ice cream treat often. I still take my family often even though I don’t live in South Haven anymore." Others, like Kent, shared similar sentiments, recalling the tradition of saving coins to indulge in Sherman’s treats.
The story of Sherman’s began in 1916 as a dairy and milk delivery business and later evolved into an ice cream destination known for flavors such as Chocomania and Mackinac Island Fudge. According to MLive, Sherman's is recognized for making their product “the old fashioned way – many flavors, still one batch at a time,” ensuring quality ingredients and natural flavorings whenever possible.
The future of the 1601 Phoenix St. property is uncertain, with plans for a sale set for this year, shared by Brian Kabban, a manager at the establishment. Kabban also conveyed his appreciation for the community's support over the years, in a comment to MLive, "It’s been a blast and an honor and a privilege". Despite inquiries, the owners were not available to comment on what may come next for the popular ice cream location after its final season.
