A tragic incident occurred in Everett on August 30 when a 5-year-old boy fell 15 feet from a second-story townhome window onto concrete. He was taken to a hospital but sadly did not survive.
Christie Veley, South County Fire's public information officer, noted that this incident was the 19th window-related accident in Snohomish County in 2024, according to MyNorthWest.
Safety recommendations, including window stops or guards to limit openings, relocating furniture away from windows, planting bushes under windows, and not relying on screens to deter falls, were reiterated by Shawneri Guzman, Community Outreach Manager for South County Fire and coordinator for Safe Kids Snohomish County, who said, "These are heartbreaking incidents that can happen to any family" and "We want to equip parents with information that can prevent this from happening to another child," disclosed in a report by KOMO News.
"If you have a child in your home and you have a window on the second or third story, your child is at risk," Veley emphasized to My NorthWest, pointing out that children's curiosity can be perilous as window screens typically fail under a mere five pounds of pressure.
