Early Sunday morning, a routine traffic stop for a seatbelt infraction led to the arrest of a convicted felon in possession of a stolen firearm in Royal Oak Township. Michigan State Police took a 28-year-old Ferndale man into custody after a pistol was spotted on the driver's floorboard of his vehicle. According to Audacy's WWJ Newsradio, the incident occurred around 2:50 a.m. on Wyoming Avenue.
The initial infraction of a seatbelt violation was complicated by the observation of illegal window tint on the man's vehicle. As troopers approached the car, the driver stepped out immediately, revealing the pistol within eyeshot. The search that followed uncovered open intoxicants, and the driver, acknowledging his status as a convicted felon, was found to be in possession of a stolen gun. This sequence of events was corroborated by a statement from MSP Second District.
