A hangar at the Capital Region International Airport was engulfed in flames and subsequently destroyed on Sunday evening, as reported by multiple sources. The fire, which began shortly after 6 p.m., led to the complete loss of a 3,200 square foot pole barn-style structure, according to the Lansing State Journal. The Lansing Fire Department arrived at the scene to find the fire breaching through the roof, necessitating a full alarm response and a "defensive approach" to control the blaze.
Officials from the airport have confirmed that, despite the severity of the incident, normal airport operations have not been affected, and no flight services have been interrupted, this same piece of information has come from Nicole Noll-Williams, the president and CEO of the Capital Region Airport Authority, who stated, "None of the airport operations have been impacted, and there are no flight service interruptions," reported by wlns.
A collaborative endeavor between the airport's Public Safety Department and the Lansing Fire Department ensured the fire was contained and no injuries have been reported so far. As a precaution and in response to potential environmental hazards, an environmental consulting company has been engaged to assess the repercussions of water runoff that may contain fuel and other hazardous materials. The Lansing Fire Department highlighted the presence of diesel, aviation fuel, and oil within the building at the time of the fire, as mentioned by FOX 17 News.
The extensive damage to the hangar led to the use of a backhoe by airport staff to demolish two outer walls and a corner of the building, a measure taken to ensure the complete extinguishment of the fire. The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, and no specific details have been provided regarding its origin or potential ignition sources.
