Two former employees of Westmoreland Hospital in Greensburg are entangled in legal troubles after they were implicated in the alleged circulation of inappropriate images of patients, a disturbing violation of privacy that the healthcare facility has vehemently condemned. According to WTAE, Peter Castellano and Melissa Tompkins, both 36, are accused of invasion of privacy and criminal use of a communication facility, with other charges potentially pending for two other individuals not yet charged.
Specifically, they are charged with capturing and sharing images showcasing "elderly patients with varying degrees of nudity," with the explicit content including depictions of patients as old as 105 years old, extending across a group text among the workers. Court documents illustrated some photos and videos portrayed bare-breasted patients and exposed genitals. The evidence from the defendants' phones shows a troubling disregard for human dignity. Through her lawyer, Casey White, Tompkins has vociferously denied participating in taking these photos, "She's disappointed," White said, per WTAE, "But she's looking forward to, in some sense, clearing her name."
Criminal complaints detailed by WPXI indicate that the alleged misconduct infuriated the leadership of Independence Health System, whose officials were quoted as being "shocked and outraged." The statement further detailed the system's immediate actions, including the swift termination of the accused individuals and an engagement with law enforcement to investigate the matter. "We are grateful to the team member who reported this misconduct, enabling us to act swiftly," the hospital officials and Independence Health said.
The case is ongoing, and Tompkins is expected to turn herself in to the police soon. If convicted, she could lose her nursing license.
