Fort Worth residents can now get their hands on telescopes and stargazing kits just with their library card, thanks to a new addition at the Fort Worth Public Library. These kits are designed to bring the wonders of the night sky closer to the community, a service that underscores the library’s commitment to expanding beyond traditional books and media.

Library enthusiast Bruce Campbell has long been the proponent of bringing the cosmos to the masses. "When I was 5, my parents opened a savings account for me," he shared, as per the City of Fort Worth. “The savings & loan gave me a guide to space exploration detailing the solar system, satellites, meteors, and comets. I was hooked.” Now president of the Fort Worth Astronomical Society, Campbell and his fellow stargazers host events at Tandy Hills Natural Area to share their telescopic views and knowledge with others.

Kathryn King, who manages the Library’s Collection Management, takes pride in curating items that are both educational and engaging. "There was an existing public interest in telescopes," King mentioned, as cited by the City of Fort Worth, discussing the process of adding new kits. Inspired by similar programs and other libraries, the Fort Worth Public Library identified the need to make stargazing accessible to all, leading to the idea of the telescope lending program.

The stargazing kits not only include telescopes but also feature accessories and literature that are essential for a fulfilling celestial experience. The kits come with "a telescope, eyepiece, moon filter, air blower, star locator, red-lens flashlight, instruction manual and two books", creating an inviting pathway into the realm of astronomy for those who might not have the means to access such equipment. As Bruce Campbell advises those taking their first steps into stargazing, "Don’t get frustrated because the telescope is not performing as expected or certain astronomical concepts just don’t make sense." Enthusiasts can always look for answers or consult with members of the Fort Worth Astronomical Society for guidance, according to the City of Fort Worth.
