If you've been itching to try the latest racket craze sweeping the nation but your sports equipment fund is a little light, the Fort Worth Public Library has just the solution: free pickleball kits. For the uninitiated, pickleball is like tennis's less pretentious cousin, with a sprinkle of ping-pong's DNA for good measure. The Fort Worth Public Library is offering kits that include everything one or two pairs of players need to start a game, including paddles, balls, a net, a set of instructions, and a handy map of local courts. It’s all neatly packaged in a bag for easy transport.
The Fort Worth Park & Recreation Department is seizing the moment, capitalizing on pickleball's booming popularity revealed in a recent report by the Association of Pickleball Professionals. They estimate a staggering 48.3 million American adults have played the sport in the past year. This uptick is part of a wider trend, yet the Fort Worth area, in particular, is riding a veritable pickleball wave. The region's first pickleball tournament happened just last June, and, according to the City of Fort Worth, it's only the beginning.
Robbie Samuel, the athletic coordinator over at the Haws Athletic Center, spilled the beans on the tournament's success in an interview with the City of Fort Worth. It appears the event was a smash, drawing in 40 players aged 13 to 72, creating a diverse and vibrant mix of fresh faces and pickleball veterans. "The primary goal of the tournament wasn’t just about winning but about bringing the community together and ensuring everyone had a great time," he mentioned, tipping his hat to organizers Sonya Rodriguez and Elizabeth Hernandez for their role in the successful event.
