The City of Fort Worth's ambitions for cleansing the Trinity River through a novel approach have been stalled. The Trinity River Waterwheel Initiative, previously slated to become a new environmental and aesthetic addition to the water's edge, is now on hold. Financial roadblocks have surfaced, prompting the city to pause the project, with the need for future funding now eclipsing initial plans.

Announced back in December 2021, the initiative was a collaboration between the City of Fort Worth, Tarrant Regional Water District, and Streams & Valleys Inc. These partners endeavored to raise the $1.9 million required for the waterwheel's construction and installation. However, as of August 31, a gap of approximately $500,000 in funding remains unmet due to rising labor and material costs, according to the City of Fort Worth.

Despite the setback, the design for the waterwheel is reportedly complete and ready to roll out once financial support is procured. Donors who contributed to the endeavor have been assured that their funds are secure. They also have the option to either request a refund or reallocate their donation to support other anti-litter efforts through Keep Fort Worth Beautiful. City staff have committed to ongoing communication with donors and will stay vigilant for grants or substantial donations to revive the initiative.
