Germantown residents, prepare for a flow of upgrades to your water system. City officials have announced that starting next month, a comprehensive water meter replacement initiative will kick off. The Public Works Department will oversee the installation of cutting-edge Kamstrup ultrasonic meters across both residential, and commercial properties – all 14,500 of them.

Significant for its push towards technological advancement, this project promises more precise water usage readings and real-time data for users through an online platform. Data collection for these new devices will work via radio frequency, relaying information to data collectors strategically placed around the city. Despite the futuristic tech, residents should expect some old-fashioned courtesy. Contractors will notify households beforehand and will even knock on doors, attempting to inform occupants before temporarily cutting off their water supply. These contractors, working under the banner of VEPO, will be dressed in uniform and driving marked vehicles for easy identification.

The City's Public Works Director, Bo Mills, vocalized his enthusiasm for the project. "We are excited to begin this important upgrade to our water system," Mills said, in a statement obtained by the City of Germantown. "This project will not only improve our ability to serve residents but will also empower them with tools to better manage their water usage and detect any issues early."

While the city embarks on this 18-month journey towards modernization, residents are advised to prepare for brief, albeit necessary service interruptions. Germantown pledges to provide updates and ensure that residents are not left high and dry, but rather, are pre-notified of impending installations. The entire project is set for completion by the summer of 2026. Should residents wish to keep afloat of emergency notifications, they can sign up at Germantown-TN.gov/Alert.
