The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is joining forces with the Girl Scout Councils of Massachusetts to host a weekend event that promises to spice up the traditional hiking and picnicking usually slated for state parks. For the sixth consecutive year, the DCR will waive parking fees statewide on September 14 and 15, as it welcomes Girl Scouts to numerous state parks throughout Massachusetts as part of the "Girl Scouts Love State Parks" national initiative. This year, the Scouts are getting a special treat with 17 tailored programs designed to help them earn their nature-based badges.
According to a statement on Mass.gov, Governor Maura Healey, a former Girl Scout, shares her enthusiasm for the program: "I am thrilled that our administration can be a part of this program to host girls and young women and provide opportunities for them to connect with the wonderful world around us." The excitement is palpable as the Scouts prepare to immerse themselves in the state's lush parks, with a chance to earn distinctions such as the Eco Friend Brownie Badge and the Eco Camper Junior Badge.
These nature lovers aren't the only ones benefiting from the collaborative efforts of the DCR and the Girl Scout Councils. Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll highlighted the broader impact of the initiative on the community: "The Girl Scouts provide opportunities for girls and young women to build confidence and inspires them to make a difference in their communities," she noted in the Mass.gov article. Moreover, all state park visitors get to enjoy free parking on this particular weekend, which could lead to bustling park activity and a communal boost in outdoor enthusiasm.
DCR Commissioner Brian Arrigo emphasized the value of the program in helping Scouts become more acquainted with Massachusetts' natural settings. "Through the Girl Scouts Love State Parks program Scouts can experience our incredible natural, recreational, and cultural resources firsthand and learn about DCR parks from our dedicated and knowledgeable staff," Arrigo said, as mentioned on Mass.gov. Programs will include "All About Flowers" at Blackstone River Valley Heritage Center and "Nature Exploration" at Borderland State Park, among others outlined on the Girl Scouts Love State Parks website. However, all events are weather-dependent, and participants are urged to stay informed about potential changes due to inclement conditions.
DCR encourages the Girl Scouts and their families to come prepared with the essentials—durable footwear, water, snacks, and of course, their uniforms. Engaging in these programs is not just an opportunity to tack on another badge but also an adventure into the splendid outdoors of Massachusetts. So dust off those hiking boots, Scouts, because the parks are calling your name this weekend.
