On a mission to bolster services for veterans and their families in the Dallas-Fort Worth and North Texas region, Governor Greg Abbott has announced a substantial funding initiative. The state is allocating over $8.6 million in Grants for Veterans’ Assistance (FVA) to various organizations within these communities.

The generous funding, exceeding $8.6 million, is set to extend a supportive hand to more than 10,900 veterans and their families, spread across 30 counties. "Texas is proud to be home to more veterans than any other state," Governor Abbott stated to the Office of the Texas Governor. "These Fund for Veterans' Assistance grants will provide thousands of brave men and women who served in our nation's military in North Texas with financial assistance and crucial services, including clinical counseling, home modifications, and service dogs. Texas will always remember and honor the sacrifices that our veterans have made for our country."

Award presentations took place at Patriot PAWS Service Dogs in Rockwall and Meals on Wheels Tarrant County in Haltom City—stops that are part of a larger effort known as Grants Across Texas. “The number of veteran-serving organizations receiving grants in the DFW and North Texas region is so large we needed two Grants Across Texas stops to recognize the awards," Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) Commissioner and Marine veteran Chuck Wright told the Office of the Texas Governor, expressing pride in these initiatives and the anticipated positive impact they will bring.

Organizations such as Baylor Research Institute, Canine Companions for Independence, and Garland Area Habitat for Humanity are among the recipients of these grants, with funds slated for a variety of services ranging from clinical counseling to home modifications. And, while the presentations will continue through the second week of October, these grants are a part of a larger commitment that has been ongoing since 2009. During the current 2024-2025 grant cycle, more than $313 million in grants have been distributed through over 1,400 FVA grants.

These efforts are made possible through multiple sources including games designated for veteran support by the Texas Lottery Commission, as well as individual donations on drivers’ licenses, outdoor recreation licenses, and vehicle registrations. Veterans in the region looking for assistance can explore the resources available to them by visiting the Texas Veterans Commission's website.
