In a move that solidifies the bench strength of Pima County's judiciary, Governor Katie Hobbs has announced the appointment of Sandra Bensley as a judge to the Pima County Superior Court. This appointment, which takes effect immediately, fills the seat left vacant by the retirement of Judge Javier Chon-Lopez. This recent development was reported on the official website of the Governor of Arizona.
Bensley, with a background that encompasses over a decade in private practice, as well as stints at the Pima County Public Defender's Office and the City of Glendale Prosecutor's Office, brings to the table a diverse portfolio of legal experience. Her expertise spans probate, trusts, estate planning, and issues relating to guardianship and conservatorship. Noteworthy in her career thus far, is her leadership as part of the State Bar of Arizona's Board of Governors, her involvement with the Arizona Women Lawyers Association, and her tenure as President of its Southern Arizona Chapter. Governor Hobbs,in a statement obtained by the Governor's office, praised Bensley's extensive connection to Southern Arizona and her wide-ranging legal expertise, asserting that she is "well equipped for this important role."
A part of Bensley's accolades is her recognition by the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce as a "40 Under 40" honoree in 2019. This distinction, coupled with her fluency in Spanish, underscores her commitment and her potential to connect with and serve a diverse community.
The Governor's choice reflects a continuing trend of selecting appointees rooted in community service and equipped with practical legal understanding. "I am proud to appoint her to the Pima County Superior Court where she will continue her exemplary service to the people of Arizona for years to come," Governor Hobbs said, according to the announcement on the governor's website. A sentiment that not only highlights Bensley's qualifications, but summarizes the ethos her appointment represents to the judiciary system in Arizona.
