Nicholas Hunter Mui, a 22-year-old from Grand Haven, has been dealt a heavy prison sentence for orchestrating a digital heist that siphoned off customers' rewards points from the Meijer mPerks loyalty program. According to WOODTV, Mui's operation, which involved selling pilfered login credentials on the internet, led to a loss exceeding $1 million for the retail giant. Mui was sentenced Thursday to a term ranging from five to twenty years for conducting a criminal enterprise.
Despite recommendations for a less severe penalty due to Mui having no prior record among other factors, Kent County Circuit Judge Mark Trusock issued a sentence that far exceeded the suggested 12-20 months. "The fact that there are thousands of people this affects", Trusock noted, underscoring the vast impact of Mui's scheme. This sentiment was echoed in a statement by Michigan Attorney General Senior Attorney Eric Sterbis during the sentencing, as noted by MLive, who acknowledged Mui's cooperation with authorities but also condemned the scope of his criminal activities, which did not cease with Meijer but spanned several companies since 2019.
Mui's illicit gains, which included roughly $630,000 in frozen cryptocurrency and cash, are to be forfeited as part of his plea agreement, with Michigan State Police and the state Attorney General's Office leading the investigation that brought his actions to light. Meijer has reportedly reimbursed customers for their stolen points after they were alerted to the crimes, as indicated in a report by WZZM13.
In addition to his prison sentence, Mui has been ordered to pay restitution to Meijer totaling $1,087,168, marking an end to a complex web of cybercrime that exploited the loyalty of myriad shoppers. Mui's defense attorney, Andrew LaPres, portrayed a picture of a bright yet misguided young man whose foray into cybercrime spiraled out of control, "He's very remorseful. The whole thing got out of control very fast," LaPres said, reflecting on how Mui turned to his expertise in computers during a time devoid of direction, as relayed by MLive.
