A Grand Rapids man has been handed a sentence of over a decade in federal prison for possessing ammunition, following a shooting incident that injured four. Craig E. Hunnicutt Jr., 43, had previously been convicted on drug trafficking charges and was barred from possessing firearms or ammunition. On Thursday, local news outlet FOX17 Online reported that the man's actions in August 2023 resulted in a 130-month sentence, nearly 11 years of incarceration.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the incident occurred at a convenience store parking lot where Hunnicutt Jr. opened fire, resulting in four people sustaining non-life-threatening injuries. "The gun violence epidemic is inflicting grave harm on our communities," U.S. Attorney Mark Totten explained. "As a convicted felon, Mr. Hunnicutt Jr. was prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition. His brazen actions of firing a gun and shooting several victims in the parking lot of a convenience store put the public at great risk of harm." Despite the limitations of federal resources, Totten affirmed their department is determined to actively pursue those who contribute to violence in the community.
Furthermore, ATF Detroit Special Agent in Charge James Deir highlighted the severity of Hunnicutt Jr.’s actions, saying, "Craig Hunnicutt Jr. is a repeat habitual felon prohibited from possessing firearms. During this incident, Hunnicutt Jr. illegally possessed a firearm and shot four people in our community." He went on to add, reassuring the community, "Rest assured: Mr. Hunnicutt Jr. will have a lot of time to redeem himself for his reprehensible conduct. Simply put, Michigan is safer with Mr. Hunnicutt Jr. off our streets and behind bars," as per the U.S. Attorney’s Office
