A report from the Nevada County Sheriff's Office detailed a recent shooting incident that took place on Conifer Lane in Grass Valley. The NCSO was notified of the incident just before 3:00 pm on Monday, September 16, when they received several 911 calls about a disturbance and gunshots in the area. A call from the gunshot victim herself, a 65-year-old woman, initiated the response, who reported needing medical aid for a gunshot wound to the neck.
The victim was found near the residence by deputies and was quickly transferred to paramedics, who subsequently took her to the hospital. She stated to the officers that the suspect remained in the house, potentially armed, and that two other family members were inside, including a young child. Establishing a perimeter, NCSO deputies worked alongside the Grass Valley Police Department to evacuate neighboring homes.
With the situation escalating, additional resources were mobilized to ensure the safety of all involved. The California Highway Patrol provided aerial assistance with a helicopter, which was taken over by the Sacramento Police Department upon the CHP's need to refuel. During the operation, a woman and a child were able to exit the premises safely. However, contact with the suspect proved more challenging, initiating the involvement of the NCSO's Special Enforcement Detail and Critical Incident Negotiations Team.
Enhanced by the presence of the NCSO's new Bearcat vehicle, which ferried personnel into the vicinity of the fraught scene, authorities obtained a search warrant. Utilizing technology on hand, drones from both the Grass Valley Police Department and the Placer County Sheriff's Office were deployed. The drone's feed revealed a disturbing image – a person down and unresponsive. After the SED team's careful approach to the home, it became apparent that the suspect, 62-year-old David Peter Weiss, had suffered what looked to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Weiss was transported to a medical facility but was pronounced dead at around 7:00 pm.
Despite several gunshot wounds to her neck, face, and back, the victim showed remarkable resilience and has reached a stable condition. She now faces a long recovery. The Sheriff's Office has appreciated the community's support and understanding during this ongoing investigation.
