Early this morning, a police officer was involved in a collision with a stolen vehicle in Grand Rapids. The incident, involving a white Kia with three juveniles inside, occurred at the intersection of Michigan Street and Lafayette Avenue.
According to FOX 17, the accident happened just before 3 a.m., when the driver of the Kia failed to adhere to a red traffic light and crashed into the GRPD cruiser, which was proceeding through a green light. Following the incident, the three juveniles attempted to flee the scene with two being apprehended shortly after and the third had to be extracted from the car by the fire department.
Injuries sustained were described as minor. The three juveniles and the police officer involved in the collision were all transported to a local hospital for treatment. As reported by WZZM 13, the intersection was closed for around two hours following the crash and has since been reopened.
Authorities have confirmed that the Kia was indeed stolen, and efforts are being made to locate its rightful owner. Grand Rapids Police Department related earlier that the same vehicle was involved in reckless driving near Fulton Street and La Grave Avenue, although a pursuit was not initiated by the officers.
Investigations into the crash are ongoing. The Grand Rapids Police Department is urging anyone with information to come forward and contact either Officer Kohl or Officer Thompson, as detailed in the report by WOOD TV. Anonymous tips can be sent through Silent Observer.
