An investigation is currently ongoing after Cincinnati police located a gun during a routine search at Stargel Stadium, situated in the city's West End neighborhood behind Robert A. Taft Information Technology High School. The findings were detailed in a district statement issued on Wednesday, in which a spokesperson for Cincinnati Public Schools confirmed the recovery of the weapon but did not provide additional information about its exact location within the stadium or who it might belong to. This incident, reported by FOX19 NOW, comes nearly a week after a shooting incident occurred near the same high school.
The discovery of the gun raises serious safety concerns, especially given that Stargel Stadium is not only adjacent to Taft High School but also serves as the home field for Shroder High School and other local schools. It was less than a week ago when a game scheduled at Stargel Stadium was forced to promptly relocate after a 13-year-old Taft student was shot following school dismissal. The subsequent lockdown of Taft High School and the hospitalization of the wounded teenager marked a violent disruption to the community's sense of security, a concern now magnified by the possibility of firearms easily finding their way into student-populated areas. According to a statement obtained by WCPO, the district indicated, "If the investigation determines a student is responsible for the gun, CPS Code of Conduct discipline will be issued, including suspension and expulsion and may also include criminal charges."
According to Cincinnati Public Schools ' latest communications, the gun's discovery did not currently lead to any changes in the schedule of upcoming games at the stadium. However, heightened awareness around the stadium's security measures is now expected as the investigation continues. The district statement, echoing the gravity of the situation, stated, "Cincinnati Public Schools cooperated with a Cincinnati Police Department search and investigation at Stargel Stadium. A weapon was found as a result of the search," as told to WLWT. The implications of such events in school-adjacent facilities cannot be overstated, and the safety of students should, by any measure, not be questioned.
