The Gwinnett County Police Department is on the lookout for two individuals following a string of thefts from ATMs in a scam known as "ATM Jackpotting." Authorities reported that the suspects, as yet unidentified, have made off with thousands of dollars after manipulating ATM machines with malware.
According to a FOX 5 Atlanta report, the first incident took place on August 27, 2024, at a Texaco gas station located at 1670 Pleasant Hill Road. The two suspects allegedly executed a faux transaction that compromised the machine's software to spit out cash without the need for a bank card. A similar heist followed on August 29, 2024, at a Chevron station at 1925 Braselton Highway, utilizing the same hacking technique.
To aid their investigation, Gwinnett County detectives are urging the public to come forward with any pertinent information regarding these crimes. AccessWDUN notes that persons with information can contact the detectives directly at 770-513-5300. Meanwhile, for those wishing to remain unnamed, tips can be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS (8477).
Crime Stoppers has gone a step further, offering a cash incentive for tips leading to an arrest and subsequent indictment. As the perpetrators remain at large, the police hope that the community can provide assistance by observing and reporting any suspicious activity, especially around stand-alone ATMs where, such scams are more likely to be attempted. Meanwhile, local businesses have been put on high alert given the recent events.
