An off-duty Harris County deputy was hospitalized in serious condition following a multiple-vehicle crash on the Hardy Toll Road. The incident, which occurred in the 18100 block of the toll road, involved six vehicles and a group of motorcyclists, as reported by FOX 26 Houston.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, speaking to KHOU, stated that the deputy was traveling in the middle lane when they spotted several motorcyclists allegedly racing, and "recklessly, racing and swerving in and out of lanes," which led to slowed traffic and the subsequent collisions. Among the sequence of events, a Ford Fiesta rear-ended a Nissan Sentra, and after that exchange, the Fiesta was struck by an oncoming vehicle.
The deputy's attempt to avoid the accident resulted in a collision with a wall. Furthermore, a Suzuki GSX-R, operated by a 23-year-old man at high velocity, impacted the deputy's vehicle. This particular series of impacts caused a Crown Victoria to flip over a concrete barrier, eventually landing inverted. The motorcyclist's Suzuki was diverted into oncoming traffic, where it was hit by another vehicle driven by a 28-year-old woman.
Authorities are still investigating the exact cause of the crash, no fatalities have been reported, and investigators are determining whether charges should be filed. Several motorcyclists, who were allegedly involved, have been detained according to officials. The deputy, along with the 23-year-old rider and a 47-year-old man involved in the crash, were hospitalized with serious injuries, the driver was transported to a hospital with a possible concussion, as per KHOU's coverage of Sheriff Gonzalez's statement.
This story will be updated with additional details as they become available and as law enforcement continues to work through the particulars of this multi-vehicle incident.
