The streets of Hays County are set to see an uptick in law enforcement presence as authorities look to curb a persistent problem: speeding drivers along U.S. Hwy 290. The Hays County Sheriff's Office, alongside deputies from the Precinct 4 Constable’s Office, began on September 8 a targeted enforcement operation aimed at mitigating hazardous driving behaviors, particularly excessive speeding and reckless disregard for traffic signals.
According to a Facebook announcement from the Hays County Sheriff's Office, the operation, which spans until September 19, will specifically concentrate on the stretch of road between Nutty Brown Road and Sawyer Ranch Road. This initiative is not only about handing out tickets but also seeks to foster voluntary compliance with traffic laws, enforce hazardous driving violations, and reduce traffic-related incidents and crashes, CBS Austin reported.
This attempt to increase road safety has garnered local support, with a convenience store employee along the affected route telling KVUE that they witness at least one crash weekly, giving a personal testimony to the dangers presented by the current driving culture.
However, not all feedback has been unequivocally positive. Local resident Josh Deragon expressed mixed feelings, while acknowledging the problem of speeding, he highlighted other issues that might also warrant attention, such as the need for better street lighting and the ongoing construction that complicates traffic flow. "I wish there were more streetlights, but definitely speeding can be a bit of an issue," Deragon told KVUE on a recent Sunday morning. "I suppose a moderate increase in policing, it could help. There’s a lot of construction, as well, which seems to be a bit of an issue."
