Fire status and public safety
The fire at Wilco Iron & Metal Recycling in Jarrell burned an estimated 85 acres before crews contained it, CBS Austin reported, citing Williamson County officials. The fire began at the facility in the 300 block of Alsace Avenue and spread from recycled materials into nearby grass. Evacuations were ordered as smoke created a health and safety concern, then lifted after the fire was contained. Crews continued working on hot spots.
Air quality and response
Air-quality conditions were reported as safe after the response. One person was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and dehydration, according to CBS Austin. The Texas A&M Forest Service, Travis County STAR Flight, Austin police, and several fire agencies assisted with the operation, the station reported.
Investigation and burn restrictions
The fire’s source remains under investigation, according to CBS Austin. Williamson County was already under a countywide burn ban that took effect Aug. 18 because of worsening drought conditions, according to Williamson County. The order can remain in effect for up to 90 days, and violations are Class C misdemeanors punishable by a fine of up to $500. County officials continue to urge residents to avoid outdoor burning.
