In a recent development on August 27, Hillsboro Police announced the arrest of Jack P Hauser on several serious charges, including Human Trafficking, Involuntary Servitude, and Criminal Mistreatment, as detailed in a report on the City of Hillsboro's official website. Hauser, who has a previous conviction requiring him to register as a sex offender, was also charged with failing to maintain his sex offender registration.
The investigation, spanning several months, unveiled Hauser's exploitation of an adult male with developmental disabilities whom he had taken under his wing following the individual's mother's passing; the victim was coerced into vending beverages and snacks at a shopping center exit, often forced to stay for extended periods through days and nights, ill-equipped with proper attire or protection against the harsh elements. Officers led by James Weed and Detective Michael Piper were commended for their dedication and empathy that steered the inquiry towards the apprehension of Hauser and the amassing of evidence linked to the cruelties afflicted upon the victim.
According to findings, the victims' living conditions were inhumane, only permitted to sleep occasionally in vehicles or a garden shed, devoid of basic amenities like electricity and running water. His interactions with people, freedom of movement, and access to financial resources and healthcare were severely constrained by Hauser.
The Hillsboro Police extend their gratitude toward the local individuals who played a crucial role in flagging this case to the authorities' attention and for their immediate support to the victim; such vigilance and active community participation have often been pivotal in surfacing cases of such grave violations. Open Door Housing Works was also recognized for its contribution to providing the victim a safe harbor in the wake of his ordeal, support that undoubtedly reflects the community's solidarity against the scourge of human trafficking.
Moreover, the police force encourages the public to stay alert and report any suspicions that could potentially lead to unveiling similar acts of exploitation.
