Hundreds of Hilton San Diego Bayfront workers are standing in solidarity as they strike for better pay and working conditions. This movement began this past Sunday and looks to push for significant changes. In a challenging stand against the hospitality giant, staff members, backed by UNITE HERE Local 30, are pushing for an economic proposal that has yet to be put on the table after months of negotiation. This situation has been ongoing for months of frustrating and stagnant negotiations, according to NBC San Diego.
The employees on the picket line are holding out for a wage increase that could amount to $15 more per hour over a new three-year contract. Currently, the lowest-paid workers earn $24 an hour, according to Unite Here Local 30 President Brigette Browning. Browning conveyed the workers' sentiment, stating, "We are hoping by calling for this strike we are pushing the company to be serious and come back to negotiations," as NBC San Diego reported.
Meanwhile, according to a FOX 5 San Diego report, a Hilton spokesperson expressed commitment to fair and reasonable negotiations. Still, as conveyed by the workers, the reality points to a differing narrative where UNITE HERE Local 30 underscores that the wages their members receive do not adequately support living in San Diego, especially for those with families. "Our members can't live in San Diego on what they're being paid," remarked Browning.
The current strike involves over 15,000 workers across the U.S. at Hyatt, Hilton, Marriott, and Omni hotels. Workers have voted to strike at 24 locations, and more might join soon as contract talks stall. UNITE HERE hopes to build on recent successes in Los Angeles and Orange County. Cynthia Lopez, a housekeeper at the Hilton Bayfront, voiced her determination in an interview, stating, "We're going to be out here as long as we can ... striking until we get what we need", as detailed by FOX 5 San Diego.
