Houston's iconic furniture magnate, Jim McIngvale, better known as "Mattress Mack," has been hospitalized but remains in stable condition and reassures the public he will be "fine." According to a statement obtained by the CW39, McIngvale sought care at St. Luke's Hospital on Saturday after experiencing unsettling cognitive symptoms.
Despite his health scare, McIngvale appears to strongly continue to promote his renowned Gallery Furniture's Labor Day sale—even from his hospital bed. In a video shared on social media, as reported by the Houston Chronicle, McIngvale recounts feeling nauseous Friday night and by Saturday morning, failing to recognize even what day it was. "I drove to work and it was the first time in 43 years I missed the exit," he said in the video. The admission is an unusual one for the tireless businessman, who is practically synonymous with work ethic in the Houston area.
"I’ll be fine,” said McIngvale in his online post, a sentiment echoing across the local community revering the 73-year-old for his entrepreneurial spirit and philanthropy over the past four decades. McIngvale's larger-than-life persona extends beyond the realm of retail, with notorious bets placed on sporting events, highlighted by his record-breaking win of over $75 million on the Houston Astros in the 2022 World Series, as detailed by CW39.
The incident led to Mack being transported to the hospital via the Mobile Stroke Unit, a specialized emergency vehicle equipped with a CT scanner and critical stroke intervention tools, to promptly treat potential ischemic strokes. While McIngvale's cognitive episode remains not fully diagnosed publicly, his enthusiasm for the store's sales has hardly waned. "We've got huge sales, huge bargains and the best way for me to get well is you buy some furniture," he conveyed to customers through the video, according to Houston Chronicle.
High-profile figures including Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and U.S. Congressman Chip Roy have taken to social media to express their well wishes for McIngvale, as noted by CW39. The wave of support signifies the businessman's meaningful footprint on not only Houstonians but on individuals from across the state who admire his generosity and unwavering support for local sports.
