Amidst heightened concerns for public safety, Howard County's Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is slated to host an in-depth discussion on active assailant preparedness. The meeting, part of the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) series, is scheduled for Thursday, October 17th, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Gary J. Arthur Community Center in Cooksville. According to the Howard County official announcement, the evening will see OEM joined by the Howard County Police Department, aiming to equip residents and participants with crucial knowledge to respond effectively should an active assailant situation arise.
The LEPC gatherings, which take place quarterly, aspire to not just prepare but to involve a broad spectrum of the community. The initiative seeks to wholly integrate local government bodies, private businesses, and non-profit organizations with residents in the concerted effort to buffer the county against the impacts of both natural and human-caused emergencies. At a time when the notion of collective safety stretches thin across the nation, meetings like these serve to restore some semblance of agency among the public.
Furthering its commitment to accessibility, the county's Office of Emergency Management emphasizes that services for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing will be made available, provided requests are made seven working days in advance of the meeting. Those in need of such services should reach out to DPW via their main line at 410-313-3440 or use Relay at 7-1-1 during standard business hours, as mentioned in the recent release.
Residents are encouraged to visit the OEM's LEPC webpage for more information or to view content from past meetings. Questions related to the LEPC or the forthcoming meeting should be directed to Ms. Lauren Chilton with the OEM, who can be reached at 410-313-6030 or via email at [email protected].
