A 19-year-old man from Hyannis has been arrested after being connected to a series of vehicular break-ins. Jakari SYLVIA is facing charges for breaking into, and attempting to break into, a total of 21 motor vehicles in the area. This string of crimes came after his July release, when he was out on personal recognizance for similar offenses involving 18 vehicles.
Despite Sylvia's initial arrest, reports of vehicle break-ins and outright thefts continued to trouble the Barnstable Police, who have been vested in solving these relentless crimes. On September 19, 2024, an arrest warrant was issued for Sylvia, and he was detained by a collaboration of different units of the police department, according to a Facebook post by the department. A subsequent search of his residence led to the recovery of stolen property.
The following day, Sylvia faced arraignment at Barnstable District Court on multiple charges, including both attempted and completed motor vehicle breaks, larceny from a motor vehicle, and three counts of larceny of a motor vehicle. Since the beginning of this crime spree some three months ago, Sylvia has been implicated in incidents involving 39 motor vehicles. He has been ordered held on $2,250 bail with GPS monitoring and a curfew should he post bail.
This case remains under active investigation. The Barnstable Police are encouraging anyone with information about the motor vehicle breaks or thefts to come forward and assist in their inquiries. Detective Christopher Botsford can be reached at 774-339-0764 for any tips or pertinent information regarding the case. The authorities hope that continued public cooperation will lead to a deeper understanding of these events and potentially prevent further crimes of this nature.
