Early in the pre-dawn hours of September 14, an incident in Deming, New Mexico escalated into an officer-involved shooting, with New Mexico State Police now leading an investigation into the events that transpired. The situation began when a Deming Police officer attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by 32-year-old Kassandra Castro who was reportedly driving carelessly. NM State Police informed that the suspect failed to stop, which led to a pursuit.
As reported by KTSM, around 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, the chase came to a head when the officer tried to approach the vehicle. According to KVIA, Castro managed to get the vehicle unstuck and started to drive in the direction of the officer, prompting him to discharge one round from his duty weapon.
This action led to Castro's immediate surrender, and she was taken into custody without further incident. Remarkably, no injuries were reported as a result of the shooting or the preceding chase. Castro is now facing charges of Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer and Aggravated Fleeing on Law Enforcement, as was confirmed by New Mexico State Police.
Moreover, it was disclosed that the suspect had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear on a charge of dangerous drugs. "The officer then fired at least one round from his weapon. but did not struck Castro with the gunfire," said New Mexico State Police, as noted by KFOX-TV. This incident is now under scrutiny by state authorities as the investigation proceeds.
