A Kalamazoo man has been charged in connection with a series of fires across the city spanning June to September, authorities reported. George Stanard, 32, faces three counts of first-degree arson and five counts of third-degree arson for incidents that have prompted concerns about community safety and property damage.
According to FOX 17, Stanard is alleged to have set fires at locations including Allen Boulevard, Walnut Street, and several others. His charges came after what Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting described as "an extraordinarily dangerous situation here in the city of Kalamazoo," and noted for fortune that no one was seriously injured or killed as a result of these incidents.
The Kalamazoo County Prosecutor's Office outlined that each first-degree arson charge could result in a life sentence and sizable fines. Third-degree charges carry a maximum of ten years in prison. The bond for Stanard was set at a steep $1 million cash/surety, due to his lengthy criminal history and the gravity of the crimes, WWMT reported.
During his court appearance, Stanard displayed visible distress upon hearing that firefighters had been injured because of the alleged arsons. "What?" he said when the judge mentioned an injury, "I was told that there was no injures at all." His emotional state escalated throughout the hearing, leading to his outburst and insistence on pleading guilty, despite the judge's standard procedure of entering an initial not guilty plea on his behalf, as reported by WOODTV.
Fire Marshal Scott Brooks highlighted the collaborative effort between different city divisions and residents that proved key in the investigation. Stanard is due back in court on Sept. 17 for a probable cause hearing.
