A Northern Michigan man is facing serious charges after allegedly threatening a woman with a shotgun and forcibly preventing her from contacting the authorities. James Michael McNamara of Kalkaska has been arraigned on multiple charges, as per an announcement from Michigan State Police officials earlier this week, according to WWJ Newsradio.
The alleged assault took place on September 3, in Onekama, where McNamara, 39-year-old, is accused of engaging in an argument with the woman, which escalated to physical assault and threats. According to the victim's account, shared with Michigan State Police and reported by UpNorthLive, McNamara threatened her with a shotgun and subsequently took her phone to prevent her from calling 911 before fleeing the scene.
Upon their arrival at around 8:45 p.m., troopers were informed by the woman who had found refuge at a neighbor's house and called for help. The authorities' records note the victim's decision to decline treatment offered by EMS. WWJ Newsradio's coverage includes that McNamara returned to the home while police were present and was immediately taken into custody.
McNamara now faces two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, one count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, and one count of interfering with an electronic communication device. Notably, the bond was set at $150,000, and McNamara is scheduled for another court appearance on Sept. 25, as documented in court records cited by UpNorthLive.
