Authorities in Largo are actively investigating a fatal shooting that left a 55-year-old man dead. Pinellas County Sheriff's Office deputies received a call regarding shots fired on Crown Drive, where they discovered the body of Mark Duell, who sustained a fatal gunshot wound. The incident, which occurred in the afternoon of August 30, is said to have stemmed from domestic issues, as indicated in a release by the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.
Responding to the reports at around 3:54 p.m., deputies from the Patrol Operations Bureau were on the scene to uncover the details of the tragedy. The shooter, identified as 24-year-old Devin Berry, has reportedly been cooperating with law enforcement. Berry claims that the shooting was an act of self-defense, suggesting layers of complexity in a situation often too readily narrated as an open-and-shut case. The detectives from robbery/homicide unit are now tasked with unpacking the circumstances that led to Duell's death.
The investigation into the fatal incident on Crown Drive is working to reconstruct the events that occurred at the residence. Devin Berry's claim of self-defense is one of several factors being examined by detectives. Although Berry is not under arrest at this time, authorities are closely scrutinizing his actions and their legal justification.
As per protocol, next of kin have been notified of Duell's death. The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office has not released any additional information regarding the motives or the specifics of the altercation.
