Laurel, Maryland is taking a significant step in supporting its homeless population and those in need of comprehensive community services with the grand opening of the Craig A. Moe Laurel Multiservice Center. Set for a ribbon cutting on September 10 at 11 AM, the center promises to be more than just a roof and walls for those it serves, per the City of Laurel's announcement.
Named after the city's long-serving former mayor, Craig A. Moe, the new facility is equipped to provide meals, showers, clothing, personal hygiene kits, and laundry services. It will also offer 19 transitional housing bedrooms, seasonal shelters, mental health care, and assistance with employment. Mayor Keith R. Sydnor expressed his pride in the center, acknowledging it as a lifeline for those who need support the most, and a fitting tribute to Moe's dedication to community service.
The facility, which was repurposed from the former SportFit building, represents a $2.4 million investment by the city back in 2020, with an additional $10,825,000 in state grants obtained to bring the project to fruition. This collaborative effort involved various state representatives, including Senator Rosapepe and Delegates Peña-Melnyk, Barnes, and Lehman, who collectively hailed the center's potential impact on local residents.
Interested parties, particularly media representatives, are invited to tour the facility following the September 10 grand opening to witness firsthand the resources and support provided.
