A Cary man, identified as Zachary Olson, 24, has been arrested and charged with felony carrying a gun on educational property and misdemeanor carrying a concealed weapon. The arrest occurred at North Carolina State University after Olson was reportedly seen "waving a handgun in the air" along Hillsborough Street. Olson was apprehended by N.C. State University Police, with the incident having been flagged initially by Raleigh police, according to WRAL.
The incident reportedly took place just before 12:15 a.m. today. Olson, who is a third-year law student at Campbell University’s law school, was found on Dan Allen Drive, close to two miles from where he was first spotted by the Chipotle at 2316 Hillsborough St. A university spokesperson confirmed that Olson is an alumnus of N.C. State, having graduated in May 2022 with a bachelor's degree in economics, as reported by The News & Observer.
Adding to Olson's profile, his arrest records reveal former employment with the Wake County District Attorney’s Office. CBS 17 uncovered that Olson was a part-time intern starting in mid-August, but his internship has since been terminated, and he is "no longer employed at the office." This adds a layer of complexity to the situation given his legal studies and short-lived association with law enforcement. The full extent of Olson's motives or intentions remain as of yet unclear.
Following the arrest, Olson was assigned a $3,000 secured bond and made his first court appearance at 1:30 p.m. today. Presently, it is important to note, Olson is "not affiliated with N.C. State," as per a university spokesperson, in a statement obatined by CBS 17.
