However, thorough inspection by the Ware County Sheriff's Office quickly determined that these reports were unsubstantiated; no evidence of an active shooter or injuries were confirmed.
In response to rumors, Superintendent Bert Smith released a clarifying statement. Smith explicitly stated, "there were NO INJURIES OR FATALITIES related to this incident," as per WSAV. Students and parents were advised to stay away from the area during the investigation, with the campus being blocked off, even if parents rapidly converged on the school, worried about their children's welfare, according to WSAV.
The superintendent's message urges families to discuss school safety and be proactive in reporting potential threats. "Families, we deeply appreciate your cooperation and patience as we prioritized the safety of our students and staff," Smith said in an announcement, as per WSAV. The incident saw counselors being made available to assist students and staff in processing the event. As families grappled with the fear that engulfed the school, a stronger police presence was promised to linger through the week.
Resilience through unity was the thread in Smith's closing remarks, as families and the school district collectively felt relief following the day's harrowing start. "As today proved, we are stronger together," punctuated the superintendent's message on WSAV, affirming the strength found in swift.
