In a public health advisory that might be a bummer for beachgoers, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has issued warnings for various popular shores throughout the county. Officials are advising residents to steer clear of certain coastal waters for activities such as swimming, surfing, and playing due to high bacterial levels.
The warnings, which affect a slew of beach areas from Marina Del Rey's Mothers Beach to Inner Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro, are based on bacterial measurements that have exceeded health standards during recent tests. These areas include, but are not limited to, the entire swim areas at Mothers Beach, Las Flores Creek at Las Flores State Beach, and Walnut Creek at Paradise Cove, according to official announcements.
Spots like Marie Canyon Storm Drain at Puerco Beach and the vicinity around the Santa Monica Pier also made the list, the public health department detailed 100 yards up and down the coast from the respective landmarks as areas to avoid. In total, a dozen locations have been flagged for elevated bacterial levels that can pose a health risk to human visitors.
While the beach closures might disrupt end-of-summer plans, public safety takes precedence. The County's beach closure hotline, which operates around the clock, is available for updated information on beach conditions at 1-800-525-5662. The Department of Public Health also provides a map of impacted locations for more detailed guidance, and to assist locals and tourists allike, in making safer recreational choices.
