A Macomb County man has been sentenced to a prison term of 10 to 30 years for inflicting severe injuries on his 11-week-old infant son. According to The Detroit News, Adam Doe, 36, from Harrison Township, was tried and convicted by a county jury on July 26 for first-degree child abuse, which resulted in the infant developing life-threatening brain injuries and fractures. The verdict came after a three-week trial.
In a move that challenged the previously determined offense variable scoring, the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office announced their intention to file a motion to correct what they consider an invalid sentence. This correction could adjust Doe's sentencing guidelines to a tighter window of 10.5 to 17.5 years. Reporting by Detroit Free Press has pinpointed the date of the initial abuse to February 22, and records indicate that Doe was charged in the same year.
Prosecutor Peter Lucido emphasized the gravity of seeking justice for vulnerable community members, stating, "It is my duty to seek justice for the most vulnerable members of our community. This defendant was held accountable for the harm he inflicted on this infant and this sentence sends a clear message that we will not tolerate child abuse," in a statement obtained by Detroit Free Press. Despite oral motions for a mistrial and to stay the proceedings, which the defense brought forth, were denied.
Adam Doe has already had 63 days deducted from his sentence as credit for time served, noted by online Macomb County Circuit Court records. His sentencing was carried out before Judge Matthew Sabaugh. While Doe's attorney, Brent Jaffe, was unable to be reached for immediate comment, the prosecutor's office is preparing to argue for a reconsideration of the sentencing variables, as communicated to the Detroit Free Press by Dawn Fraylick, communications director for the prosecutor's office.
