Residents of Pennsylvania Avenue Southeast experienced a brief moment of chaos earlier this month when an assault occurred in broad daylight. The Metropolitan Police Department reports that the incident took place on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at around 1:01 p.m. on the 600 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, Southeast.
The details of the assault were relatively straightforward: the suspect, now identified as 39-year-old Coneleonte Barrett, of Southeast, DC, approached the victim and then committed the assault before fleeing the scene. The victim, who has not been named, was able to transport himself to a local hospital, where he was treated for injuries that were described as non-life-threatening.
The police acted on leads and after a week-long investigation, Barrett was arrested on Monday, September 9. According to a statement by the MPD, Barrett has been charged with Felony Assault. It's unclear if Barrett has stated a motive or has legal representation at this time.
While the arrest provides a partial conclusion to the ordeal those in the vicinity of the assault may continue to feel the ripples of unease that events such as these invariably stir. Local residents and businesses are encouraged by law enforcement to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities they might witness.
