A 28-year-old Bridgeport Township man is in critical condition after a pickup truck he was driving crashed into a Saginaw home and caught fire, throwing him onto the house's roof. The incident took place Saturday afternoon around 4:15 p.m. near Hess Road and Beechwood Avenue, according to a report by abc12. Police have yet to release details on how the crash occurred, and the investigation continued as of yesterday.
Despite the severity of the crash, the three people inside the house at the time were not injured. The family, including Shaneka Cannon who had recently been on maternity leave with a newborn and a nine-year-old son, experienced the terror of the truck smashing into their residence. The truck was on fire causing substantial damage to the property, WNEM reports. Both children miraculously emerged from the incident without physical harm.
"Material things can be replaced, but people can't," Sharia Woods, Cannon's sister, told WNEM. The house received significant damage from the vehicle, which caused a fire after the crash, according to a report by Mid-Michigan Now. The fire department and police responded promptly to the crisis, rescuing the injured man from the roof and extinguishing the blaze.
The unprecedented accident left Cannon, without homeowners insurance and already on unpaid maternity leave, facing the challenge of repairing her damaged home to ensure safety and shelter for her children. Responding to the need, Woods has set up a GoFundMe campaign to assist her sister with the repair bills. "She don't know where to start. So, that's two bedrooms that were destroyed and then they’re thinking that the roof could cave in. So, the GoFundMe is just to get us started," Woods explained to WNEM. Those interested in supporting Cannon's family can make donations through the provided GoFundMe link.
The driver, who was found unresponsive after being ejected onto the roof, was listed in critical but stable condition as of yesterday morning. Footage circulating on social media depicted the man lying motionless before authorities were able to offer assistance. The Saginaw Police Department is urging anyone with information about the crash to contact Officer Jeff Dehaan at 989-759-1439. Potential charges are yet to be discussed, as the police await the outcome of their ongoing investigation.
