An Oakland County man has been taken into custody after a heated argument with his neighbor in Walled Lake turned violent, leading to shots fired and an hours-long standoff. The incident erupted yesterday in the Dover Hill neighborhood, where the suspect, who has not been identified by authorities, allegedly fired a gun at his neighbor, causing injury, CBS News Detroit reports.

Police were dispatched to the scene around 4:30 a.m., and on arrival, they found a male victim approximately 45 years old with a gunshot wound, Walled Lake Police Chief Paul Shakinas explained the victim was taken to a local hospital and is expected to recover thankfully the situation did not escalate further with hostages or severe injuries. The gunman’s motive remains under investigation, but the past tensions between the two men were evidently a contributing factor to the dispute's escalation. The neighboring community was assisted by the Oakland County SWAT team and Novi police officers, who managed to coax the suspect out of his barricaded home. The suspect's girlfriend and 3-year-old son were also in the house at the time but were unharmed during the crisis.

In a separate account provided by FOX 2 Detroit, the injured neighbor, Brian Markowski, recounted the episode, detailing that it began with an altercation between the suspect and his girlfriend. "He threw his girlfriend out in the middle of the night and she was sitting in the car and I could hear her whimpering, and she sounded so upset and so distraught," Markowski told FOX 2 Detroit. The conflict between the neighbors further escalated, resulting in Markowski being shot in the leg inside his garage before the suspect locked himself and his family inside their residence.

Langton, a reporter for Audacy, provided coverage during the standoff and described the police’s response as the suspect eventually surrendered after almost four hours, and according to Walled Lake Police Chief Paul Shakinas expressed gratitude for the collaboration between local law enforcement agencies, stating "You know, this can happen anywhere, and it doesn't matter if it's a small town or a big city." The suspect was also reported to have suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital; his identity remains undisclosed, pending charges.
