A ninth-grade student from Manatee County was taken into custody after allegations surfaced of his involvement in making school shooting threats on social media, law enforcement officials reported. The 15-year-old, whose identity has been withheld due to his age, was said to have used Snapchat to express intents of carrying out a shooting today at several schools within the county.
The Manatee County Sheriff's Office, along with Bradenton Police, initiated an investigation into the threats yesterday and, after tracking down the source, apprehended the young man who admitted during questioning that his statements were meant as a joke. In a statement obtained by WFLA, Sheriff Rick Wells conveyed the severity of the situation, emphasizing that "Our students’ safety is always our highest priority, and these threats are taken very seriously."
While detective efforts yielded no findings of actual weapons in the student's possession, the gravity of the threats translated to an immediate arrest with the young man being taken to the juvenile detention center. Acknowledging the arrest, Bayshore High School's principal swiftly notified the student body and their families of the incident through an email, aiming to provide transparency and assurance in the shadow of potential danger.
Furthermore, officials pointed out their ongoing evaluations of other social media posts linked to the case, and to bolster security measures and parental peace of mind, additional deputies were deployed to monitor the schools in question today. The School District of Manatee County, in a communication cited by Bradenton Herald, authorities reassured anxious parents and staff by confirming that there was no ongoing threat to the schools.
Citizens are urged to stay vigilant and help maintain community safety by reporting any threats related to Manatee County schools through law enforcement channels or the Flority Florida app, as noted by WTSP.
