A high-speed chase and subsequent manhunt unfolded yesterday when a 23-year-old man staggered through the Rocky Mountain National Park, evading park law enforcement and eventually crashing his vehicle after a reckless 48-mile dash on US Highway 34.
According to the National Park Service, attempts to apprehend the suspect by deploying strip sticks at Deer Ridge Junction failed as the white male, identified as being 5 foot 9 inches and weighing 165 pounds, continued to speed south past the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center, striking another vehicle, which resulted in the hospitalization of its three occupants and one of them, critically injured, as the manic pursuit spilled into the town of Estes Park where law enforcement officers from Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park Police Department, and Larimer County Sheriff's Office converged the chase soon became a foot pursuit as the suspect bailed to elude capture on foot.
Residents along High Drive in Estes Park were advised to shelter in place while the suspect, described as bald and last seen without a shirt or shoes, appeared visibly injured from the crash. "If you see this person, do not approach and immediately call 911," per the National Park Service.
