In a display of diplomatic support for the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, Governor Maura Healey and First Lady Joanna Lydgate of Massachusetts opened the doors to the State House for a special meeting with Ukraine's First Lady, Olena Zelenska. The group, surrounded by Ukrainian officials, dedicated time to discussing Massachusetts’ support and the broader commitment of the United States to the Ukrainian people amidst the tumultuous backdrop of war.
During the meeting, Governor Healey didn't mince words, declaring, "It was an honor for Joanna and me to welcome First Lady Olena Zelenska to Massachusetts and share with her our unwavering support for the people of Ukraine in the face of the Russian invasion and continued war of aggression," as obtained by Mass.gov. Healey expressed inspiration from the resilience demonstrated by the Ukrainian people and the determination of their leadership.
Following the ceremonial engagement, Governor Healey urged residents of her state to get involved with local organizations actively assisting Ukraine. She highlighted several Massachusetts-based groups, including the Sunflower of Peace Foundation, Ukraine Forward Initiative, One World Strong, and Osnova—all of which offer various forms of humanitarian aid and resources vital for Ukrainians during these trying times.
Other noted organizations working toward relief are Olga's List, assisting refugees displaced by the Russian invasion, and educational groups such as the Ukrainian American Educational Center of Boston and the Ukrainian Cultural Center of New England, who foster the Ukrainian culture and heritage. The Governor's office, believing, in the potential for community impact, encourages Massachusetts citizens to educate themselves on these local efforts and contribute support for the war-torn nation.
