A series of events unfolded yesterday as a carjacking escalated to a deadly shooting near a Memphis school. Tadarius Nichols, 25, identified as the driver in the incident, is now in custody. According to Action News 5, Nichols and an accomplice allegedly carjacked a vehicle at gunpoint before being spotted by police, leading to a chase that ended with gunfire in front of Cornerstone Prep Denver Campus.
During an ensuing pursuit, police state that one suspect discharged a firearm at officers. The response by law enforcement resulted in the death of one suspect, while Nichols was apprehended after the chase. As reported by FOX13 Memphis, no officers were injured during a altercation. Meanwhile, the school affected by this violent encounter, Cornerstone Prep Denver Campus, announced closure for today to recover from the incident.
Earlier that day, the carjacking victim Stacey Adams detailed a harrowing experience. "He came on my side of the car – on the driver side with a long silver shotgun and pointed at me," Adams explained in an interview with WREG. Adams recounted how she was targeted by two armed men as she arrived home from work, too shocked to react despite being armed herself.
By midday, police spotted the stolen white 2020 Dodge Charger and attempted a traffic stop. The suspects fled, culminating in a confrontation at Frayser Boulevard and Adair Drive where shots were exchanged. "I don't know how to feel," said Adams, reflecting on the suspects' fate. "I'm mad, and I'm sad and I don't really care because of how I was treated," she told WREG. A weapon was found near the deceased suspect, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has initiated an investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
