Memphis' legendary rap duo 8Ball & MJG received a permanent tribute in their hometown neighborhood of Orange Mound this past weekend, with a street dedication that solidified their legacy in a manner that's both figuratively and set in stone. The intersection of Park Avenue and Airways Boulevard in Memphis now bears their names, with "MJG Avenue" and "8Ball Boulevard" signs marking the significant crossroad that influenced their careers, as reported by FOX13 Memphis.
The celebration attracted a massive turnout, as fans flocked to catch a glimpse and exchange words with the influential musicians. MJG, reminiscing about his roots, as per Action News 5, said, “I never would have dreamed that it would be named after me, so it is a blessing." He called out to the community with inspiration and unity, urging Memphis to strive for betterment. Gaining the city's support throughout their career, both 8Ball & MJG expressed deep gratitude for the recognition they've received from the city that served as the backdrop for their artistry.
As noted by FOX13 Memphis, 8Ball acknowledged the significance of the newly-named intersection, pointing out that MJG spent the first 18 years of his life steps away on Sample Street. Memphis City Council Chairman JB Smiley underscored the duo's standing in Memphis' cultural panorama, positioning them alongside icons like Elvis Presley regarding their impact on the city’s reputation.
The ceremony occurred against recent tensions in the Memphis music scene. With the community still reeling from the 2021 murder of Young Dolph, the honor bestowed upon 8Ball & MJG I offered a moment of unity and celebration in a time colored by grief and strife. "My homeboy, my big bro from Georgia said Memphis need a hug," 8Ball conveyed in a statement detailed by FOX13 Memphis, signaling the event as a source of solace for the city.
