
Mesquite Police K9 Axel, an esteemed local law enforcement team member, is stepping down from his patrol duties after over seven years of service to the community. Axel, partnered with Officer Jeremy Wilemon, has been recognized as one of the leading tracking teams in the North Texas area. As reported by the Mesquite Police Department, Axel conducted 606 deployments during his career, including sniffing out narcotics and aiding in nearly 393 arrests.
Born on February 9th, 2016, Axel became an active member of the Mesquite Police Department on March 20th, 2017, since when he has used his acute senses to locate over $30,000 in US currency and a significant haul of illegal drugs, including marijuana, heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, and THC wax, evident in Axel's deployment records, which reflect a notable part of his contributions to the force which has repeatedly kept officers from potentially dangerous situations when searching for suspects. This diligent canine has been a vital asset to Mesquite and 19 other state and federal agencies, such as the US Marshals and FBI.
His keen nose was responsible for 238 narcotic detections and 368 patrol operations, critical support in the intricate dance of law enforcement and public safety. With Axel's retirement, he is now set to enjoy a more relaxed life with Officer Wilemon, who will also be transitioning to work with a new K9 partner named Smoke, whose story is about to unfold.
