Over a week, the authorities in Washington D.C. have been active in recovering a myriad of illegal firearms—from rifles and shotguns to pistols and "Ghost Guns"—across various neighborhoods. As reported by the official Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) website, from September 2 to September 9, authorities retrieved 48 firearms to stem the tide of violent crime and rebuild the community's sense of security.
The recovered cache spanned many makes and models, indicating the diverse nature of illegal arms within the city's limits. Significant recoveries included a Marlin Arms 1897 .22 caliber rifle, Browning Arms rifles, and several Glock handguns. As noted by the MPD, "This is not a comprehensive list of all guns recovered in the District of Columbia," signifying that the problem may be more extensive than the week's tally reflects.
The Metropolitan Police Department also credits community cooperation: "We also thank members of the community for their help in creating safe neighborhoods."
MPD maintains an anonymous tip line and offers monetary rewards for information leading to arrests and the recovery of illegal arms, a strategy geared towards involving residents directly in public safety initiatives.
Police encourage reporting illegal firearm activity to the anonymous tip line at 202-727-9099 or via text message to 50411. If you provide information that leads to an arrest and seizure, you could earn up to $2,500. The department hopes this reward will encourage cooperation between law enforcement and the community to help reduce crime.
