Milwaukee’s youth are getting a renewed platform to voice their ideas and perspectives. In an effort to bring the concerns and solutions of young people to the forefront of local governance, Milwaukee County's Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson announced an interactive press conference scheduled for September 20. The event, encouraging high schoolers to apply for the Milwaukee County Youth Commission's 2025 term, will be hosted at Bay View High School and live streamed to other schools in the district.
The conference will feature not only Nicholson but also members of the current Youth Commission and Bay View High School's Principal, Jeffrey Gaddis. A question-and-answer session following the formal remarks will provide prospective applicants with insight into the commission’s mission and selection process. "Serving on the Youth Commission offers young people an invaluable opportunity to actively shape the future of our community," Nicholson stated in a press release cited by Milwaukee County.
County Executive David Crowley, who played an instrumental role in rejuvenating the commission alongside Nicholson, has also been a vocal advocate for youth participation in politics. According to a press release, he said, “These young leaders are working to advance the interests of our youth, make their voices heard on policy and budgetary decisions, and advance our shared vision of achieving racial equity.” Crowley underlined the significance of youth engagement as a means to propel Milwaukee County toward a more equitable future and urged students across the county to consider the opportunity.
Indeed, the Youth Commission has been known for its advisory role within the county government, particularly regarding policy decisions. Re-established through a unanimous decision by the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors in 2022, as per the Milwaukee County press release, it serves as a testament to the county’s dedication to incorporating the perspectives of its younger generations into its quest for racial equity.
With the Commission’s 2025 term on the horizon, Milwaukee County leadership is looking to sustain and amplify the momentum generated by its youth. For students interested in civic engagement and shaping their community, Friday’s press conference might just be the stepping stone to a more active role in local governance.
