Minnesota's gas station owners have an upcoming opportunity to take part in the state's push toward a future that is less dependent on conventional fossil fuels. In a recent announcement, Senator Rob Kupec (DFL-Moorhead) has publicized a new state grant designed to support service stations in expanding their range of ethanol-blended motor fuels, according to Senate DFL Minnesota's website. "Biofuels are saving our drivers money and supporting our agricultural and renewable energy sectors, a win-win for Minnesota," Sen. Kupec said, encouraging eligible parties to apply.

The assistance comes in the form of the Agricultural Growth, Research, and Innovation (AGRI) Infrastructure Grants, totaling approximately $3.3 million. These grants, distributed by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, are geared towards smaller businesses, offering a potential financial boon for service stations with no more than 10 petroleum dispensing sites within the state. The project, funded through a legislative appropriation and with supplementary support from Minnesota Corn, covers expenses for equipment such as retail petroleum dispensers, tanks, and more that are compatible with at least E25 fuel blends.

Eligibility criteria specify that applicants can request an amount ranging between $5,000 and $199,000 for an individual endeavor – but there's a catch. Businesses must pledge a cash match of at least 35% of the total project cost, ensuring that grant recipients also have skin in the game. It's an investment in a green future—not just a handout.

It is important to note, however, that funds are strictly for costs incurred post signing of the grant contract, which is expected in early 2025. Applicants should be actively operating and dispensing fuel at the time of their application; new stations under construction, or those yet to break ground, need not apply. For those interested, the window for submissions is until 4 p.m. on Thursday, October 30, 2024, exclusively via the MDA’s online system.

Minnesota is thus placing a bet on both the immediate and long-term benefits of biofuels; from economic reprieve at the pump to bolstering local agriculture. Senator Kupec's push is a clarion call for engagement at the nexus of commerce and conservation.
