In an effort to support burgeoning law enforcement professionals, the Minnesota Sheriff's Association (MSA) has rolled out a scholarship program aiming to financially bolster those in pursuit of a career as peacekeepers. Announced by Sheriff Luke Hennen, the program is set to extend a helping hand in the form of scholarships to qualified students across Minnesota.

This initiative will enable up to 18 students to more easily manage their educational expenses with scholarships of $2,000 each. The funds have been pooled together by the collective wills of Minnesota's 87 sheriffs, intent on fostering the next crop of law enforcement officials. The scholarships are a signpost of MSA's recognition of the significant cost barrier that policing studies often present and their firm belief in the value of pre-entry training. "I encourage law enforcement students from Scott County to apply for this scholarship and take advantage of the opportunity to support their education," Hennen was quoted to say on the Scott County website.

Students from Scott County with their sights set on the badge and gun can be eligible if they are currently enrolled in a mandated POST Skills Program, are in their second year of a two-year law enforcement program, or the third or fourth year of a four-year college criminal justice program. The scholarships represent a vital resource, potentially easing the financial strain that often accompanies higher education, and speak to a broader investment in qualified, well-educated law enforcement professionals.

Those wishing to apply must do so by November 30 and can find the necessary application forms on the MSA's website. Fully completed applications, along with transcripts from each student’s school or schools attended must be submitted in person or by mail to the Scott County Sheriff’s Office. With a decision looming by the year's end, the future enforcers of law anticipating the result can expect to hear scholarship decisions by December 30, 2024, as the wheels of administration turn and bring to fruition the aims of those hopefuls and their benefactors alike.
